Ellen Dimmock was the second child of William Dimmock & Mary Ann Peacock born April 10th & christened May 31st, 1868 at the Abbey, St Albans, Herts.
In 1871 Ellen, her older brother & younger sister & parents were living in St Albans where her father was a gardener & her mother a hat maker.
Ellen was still at home with her parents in 1881& living at New England St, St Albans & working as a dressmaker. Her older brother Alfred was still at home, as was younger sister Kate. Her grandfather, Thomas Peacock, was living with the family at the time of the census.
In 1891 Ellen was listed as Nellie on the census form & still at home at New England St. She continued to work as a dressmaker & her mother was a laundress & her father a gardener.
Ellen married Ernest John Mitchell in April-June 1896 at St Albans. Ernest John was born September 23rd, 1869 & christened May 8th, 1883 at St Albans when 13 years old. He was the son of Eliza & Daniel Mitchell, a master tailor.
In 1901 Ellen & Ernest were living at 30 Church St, St Albans & Ernest was a foreman printer compositor.
By 1911 they had moved to a 6-roomed house named ‘Glenthorpe’, Belmont Hill, St Albans & Ernest continued to be a foreman compositor. It was noted on the census that they had no children.
Ernest died March 5th, 1932 at St Albans & Mid Herts Hospital & Dispensary. Administration of his will was granted on October 10th, 1932 to his widow Ellen & his brother, Herbert Peter Mitchell, a retired tailor. His effects amounted to £4,010.11s.6d. & resworn as £4,052.
The 1939 register shows widowed Ellen living at 25 St Peters Rd, St Albans & described as living on private means. With her were 2 spinsters – Dora M Knowles, a shop manageress, & Annie E Knowles, unpaid domestic duties.
Ellen died on March 25th, 1952 at The Napsbury Hospital, St Albans. Her will was administered by Dora Mary Knowles & her effects were £1,461.6s.2d.
